Anerley Haven Frail Care
celebrates 31 years of caring for the frail
It’s so nice to know there is a frail-care facility like this – it’s like one big family.
Tucked away in the small seaside town of Anerley on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, is Anerley Haven Frail Care, a care facility that offers a nurturing and loving environment for the elderly and frail. With dedicated and qualified nursing sisters, staff nurses and caregivers, this centre prides itself on high nursing standards with a personalised-care approach as well as round-the-clock security.
Pastor Boet Breedt of the 7th Day Adventist Church realised a need to establish a frail care facility for residents who could no longer care for themselves. His vision was realised in 1987 when Anerley Haven Frail Care was opened and today this Christian-based care centre celebrates 31 years and can accommodate up to 85 residents.
There are four retirement centres that are under the auspices of the 7th Day Adventist Church, namely Anerley Place Retirement Residences; and Sea Breeze, Banyan Tree and Royce Haven Retirement Complexes. Anerley Haven Frail Care is also involved with Meals on Wheels Community Services, an organisation that reaches out to individuals and communities in need and provides many folk with one meal a day.
Set in beautifully tended gardens, residents at Anerley Haven Frail Care can relax in natural surroundings, with the Indian Ocean just a few metres away. To keep their minds alert, there is regular entertainment such as musical shows, sing-alongs, church meetings and painting classes. There are also exercise classes to keep the body in shape. For the avid reader, a well-stocked library is available.
“It’s heart-wrenching for families to watch an elderly parent’s health slowly fail and many of them are not equipped to cope, and this is why our centre is a lifeline for them to know that there is professional 24-hour care available,” says administrator, David Morrison-Young.
“We know how difficult it is for the families to admit someone into frail care, but we give them peace of mind knowing that a loved one will receive total care 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” says David. “While many of the residents are brought to Anerley Haven when they are nearing the end of their lives, there are also success stories where a resident’s health has improved enough for them to return to their family. Supervised medication, good food and specialised dietary requirements and loving care are what our frail care residents thrive on.”
