MORE than 30 Hibiscus Coast Municipality councillors voted in favour of the proposed nudist beach at a council meeting held at the chambers today.
Eight councillors voted against it, while five abstained.
“The municipality has engaged with different communities on this matter and has even held a public debate session,” said municipal manager Max Mbili.
He explained that the municipality felt the beach could contribute to a growth in tourism, with economic spin-offs for the coast.
“Having such a beach on the South Coast is likely to attract many naturists as they would feel safe from being prosecuted,” he said.
The South African National Naturist Association (SANNA), spokesman Serge Pavlovic said he wasn’t expecting that council would approve the proposed beach.
“We would like to commend the HCM for the professional manner in which it handled the our application for a naturist beach,” he said. READ MORE ON EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE VOTE HERE
