Would-be thief pepper sprays shop assistant in Park Rynie

An attempt to rob a take-away in Caine Road, Park Rynie by a man armed with pepper spray last week proved unsuccessful.

Last Thursday  Ken Ian McLachlan (42), went to the take-away, ostensibly for a cup of coffee, at about 3pm.

After that, he reportedly returned to the shop several times, asking for a drink of water each time.

At 5pm, McLachlan returned again and this time, approached the shop assistant and sprayed her in the face with pepper spray. He then tried to open the cash register, which was locked.

“He grappled with the woman and tried to overpower her in order to get the key to the cash register.  His attempts were futile so he grabbed the cash register and fled towards the railway tracks, with a good Samaritan from a neighbouring business hot on his heels,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

McLachlan was arrested in the bushes near the railway tracks by a security official and the cash register, with all the money still in it, was recovered.

He made his first court appearance on Monday and will remain in custody until his next appearance on July 26.
