Business burglaries foiled at Scottburgh Mall

Scottburgh Mall

Scottburgh Mall was hit by criminals once again between Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning, but this time nothing was actually stolen.

The intruders are believed to have gained access to three shops inside the mall by cutting holes in the roof.

The shops that were hit were Vodacom, Jet and African Bank, confirmed mall management. The security cameras from Vodacom were switched off, but the alarm system did go off.

“The break-in was discovered by the security company, which contacted Vodacom store management,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The intruders then attempted to get into Jet,

After entry had been gained through the roof, a ceiling board above the cash office had been removed and the alarm system appeared to have been tampered with. Nothing was stolen, and the attempted break-in was discovered only when it reopened for business on Monday morning.

The criminals then tried their luck at African Bank, where they failed once again to steal anything. By this time, mall security had responded and searched the premises, but  the would-be thieves had already made their way back up onto the roof.

“We can safely say that these criminals’ efforts were in vain as these shops were well secured and with alarms. We are glad that nothing was actually taken,” said Scottburgh Mall manager, Lorraine Scheepers.
