Winter Holiday Guide: Discover the South Coast’s ‘secret season’

A stunning South Coast sunrise.

WINTER is one of the South Coast’s best kept secrets.

While the rest of the country shivers, the weather here is almost always sunny and clear, the mercury hovering around the mid twenties during the day and seldom dropping below 10 degrees at night.

Many South Coast fishermen believe the blooming aloes coincide with sardine time. Sometimes the ‘greatest shoals’ are a no-show, but when they do arrive, the sardine run is nothing short of spectacular.

Sardines galore at Pumula.

And this year we are in luck – all indications are we are in for the best sardine run in years, with netting already having taken place at Ramsgate, Port Shepstone, Pumula,Umzumbe and Scottburgh.

Sharks and game fish are attracted by the sardines, too, and the anglers arrive in droves. The South Coast is renowned for its excellent winter fishing.

However, the South Coast’s almost perfect weather is just one of its many winter attractions. For a start, the surfers wait for for the big cold fronts that bring with them the South Coast’s world-famous winter surf.

Finally, the winter months offer wonderful whale sighting. As the ocean cools in winter, the humpback and southern right whales start to move to Mozambique waters to breed, returning to the Antarctic seas as summer approaches.

As many people are discovering, winter on the South Coast is simply magic in so many ways. Come and see for yourself.
