Ugu MM’s family under threat from frustrated community

Ugu District Municipality municipal manager DD Naidoo.

Frustrated and very tired, Ugu Municipal Manager DD Naidoo is pleading with the community to leave his family alone.

This follows threats by a group of people to invade his home in order to vent their frustrations at the ongoing crisis which has seen parts of the coast going without water for nearly 10 days.

Mr Naidoo was speaking at a press briefing at Ugu on Tuesday this week where he revealed that his family was very distressed by these threats.

A group of angry people apparently stormed the family’s home on Monday this week after Mr Naidoo’s street address was posted on Facebook.

Asked how they were coping, Mr Naidoo said his family had hardly slept since, worrying about what the group was planning next.

Police are on high alert following the incident.

He said he had also been called ‘a baboon’ and ‘a terrorist’ who was sitting back and ‘eating fish curry’.

“Some posts have racial connotations and are unacceptable. Everyone needs water, whether they are grey, blue, pink or red, so there is no need for racial slurs or insults.”

Mr Naidoo felt it was grossly unfair to embroil his family in the crisis, as they were outsiders and had no role to play.

“My family has done nothing to you. If it were up to them, I’d call it a day because we hardly sleep at night,” he said.

Municipal spokesman France Zama said such actions may have unintentional consequences, both for the family being threatened and those doing the threatening.

“This crisis is not attributable to Mr Naidoo or his family and therefore they should not be targeted,” he said.
