Newly-appointed Ugu Corporate Services manager, Vela Owen Mazibuko.

The appointment was confirmed by Ugu mayor Mondli Chiliza last Thursday.

He will be responsible for personnel administration, employee wellness and safety, and for ensuring staff are in a position to provide water and sanitation to communities.

Mr Mazibuko holds a degree in human resources and is currently enrolled for a master’s degree in public administration.

He has extensive experience in human resource departments in both the private and government sectors, including at Transnet, Telkom and South African Breweries.

Mr Mazibuko joined Ugu in 2008 as a labour relations coordinator before becoming a manager and later senior manager in the corporate services department.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Mazibuko said the corporate services department existed to ‘render a comprehensive, integrated human resource and administration function to enhance service delivery and look after the welfare of all employees’ – something he said he had had a passion for for years.

“My plans include improving customer care, developing my employees, and instilling discipline among my staff to ensure water services are rendered,” he added.

Mr Mazibuko is married, with five children.

During his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family and, as the former owner of Gamalakhe-based football club, Island City, he also loves watching soccer.
