Hibberdene Happenings: Rob and Johan both lose the battle

File Photo

SAD news this week is the deaths, both on Wednesday last week and both as a result of cancer, of Rob Howse and Johan Calitz. Rob died only a few days short of his 83rd birthday and deepest sympathy goes to his wife Rose and family members.

Johan will be laid to rest after an NG Church service at the Methodist Church this Friday at 3pm, and condolences are extended to his family.

RIP Len

A large crowd paid tribute to Len Myburgh at his funeral held at the Methodist Church last Friday. Len will definitely be sadly missed.

Bumper breakfast

With the cancellation of the Methodist men’s breakfasts, a bumper crowd of men is expected to attend Mizpah Church’s breakfast at the church premises this Saturday, May 19. For only R20 per person, you can enjoy a morning of good food and fellowship. Contact Edgar at 084 5820772 for more information.

Be enlightened

The Hare Krishna Service Group will hold an enlightenment session at the Hibberdene Care Centre on Saturday, May 26, at 3pm. Contact Rajin Mahabeer at 082 8362758 for more details.

Clinic bookings

Should you wish to attend either the eye or dental clinic today, you may still be able to secure a booking by phoning 073 1653961 (eyes) or 082 2935757 for the dentist.

No details

Last weekend’s fishing competition at Pumula attracted several locals, but reticent as fishermen are, your scribe has received no news of any results.

It is thought that perhaps the results have been forwarded to the Herald’s sports editor.

Flipping scary

A boat flipped whilst coming in to land at Hibberdene beach last Sunday afternoon, but there were no injuries and it was quickly righted without incident.

Bon voyage

Phyllis Michaelis has travelled to Gauteng to join her brother Timothy Dalton from Ireland on a memorable trip to some of South Africa’s game reserves. She is wished a wonderful time away.

Get well soon

Annie Rhynes from Club Marina in Ifafa is not too well at present and good wishes for a speedy recovery are going her way. Barry Jones, although also not too well, has been discharged from hospital once again and has been enjoying a visit from his brother and sister-in-law Chris and Anne Jones, from Neston in England. They left for home again yesterday (Tuesday). It is hoped that Barry’s health improves considerably.

Shocking state

Your scribe was absolutely shocked by the state of Station Road (adjacent to the beach) last Friday afternoon – it was filthy, with rubbish strewn all over the pavement edges, plastic everywhere and water trickling through all the gutters. Not a very welcome sight to attract beachgoers.

Ongoing collection

Thanks to all of you who have contributed plastic bread sealers to your scribe lately. Her collection of sealers for the wheelchair project is ongoing and all donations are gratefully received. They may be left at the clinic on a Wednesday morning.

Please donate

Remember too that any donations for ‘Winter Warmth’ for either the Lions or the Methodist Church’s jumble sale on June 2nd, will be most welcome.

Happy celebrations

Birthday wishes for this week go to Ray Perks (19th), Talitha Rossouw (20th), Anne-Marie Oosthuizen (21st) and Cecil McDonald (22nd). Remember to watch the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on TV this Saturday – you know how women love weddings! Lastly, all Muslim readers and advertisers are wished well for Ramadan, which starts this Thursday, May 17th. Don’t forget to keep Lizzie busy with all things Hibberdene.
