OPINION: ‘Old photo might evoke sweet memories’

A photograph taken on October 3, 1980, at Port Shepstone has the inscription D Varty on the back and might evoke some sweet memories for the family.

DEAR Editor,-

The attached photograph is one that I dug up from my steam engine collections from long ago.

It depicts the then technical superintendent (3-10-80 D Varty written on the back) standing next to an engine he was operating on October 3, 1980.

It may evoke sweet memories for him and his family, who still live on the South Coast.

From the photo, it would appear that the engine’s specific purpose was to transport sugar cane to and from Port Shepstone and Paddock.
