Southport man threatened with screwdriver and hammer

In the latest in a string of attacks in the Southport area over the past few months, intruders armed with a hammer and a screwdriver attacked a man at his St John’s Road home last Sunday.

The 50-year-old man awoke at around 1.30m to find two men in his room. They were armed with a screwdriver and a hammer.

“The men demanded cash and the keys to his vehicle, which they said they needed in order to travel to Bhobhoyi,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

The men threatened to stab him with the screwdriver but he managed to escape through a window

A neighbour alerted a security company, and the intruders fled with a laptop, cellphone and cash.

People are urged to ensure that their doors and safety gates are locked at all time,s especially during the night.

“Change your routine regularly. Report suspicious people who appear to be observing your movements to your local police,” advised Lt-Col Wiid.
