Wrap up – cold, rain and snow is on the way

Lesotho snowstorm. The mountain kingdom and the Drakensberg mountains are expected to be covered in un seasonable snow over the next few days.

IT’S not quite a white Christmas, but the prospect of snow in the middle of November is something of a novelty in South Africa.

Snow Report South Africa predicts that unseasonal snow should start falling in the Western Cape and in the western parts of the Eastern Cape tonight. About 10cm of snow is expected to coat the peaks of the Matroosberg tonight and there is a possibility of even more snow on the Groot Swartberg, and a dusting for the Outeniquas.

Tomorrow, heavy falls are expected in Lesotho and the Eastern Cape Drakensberg, with medium to light falls on the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg.

Mountain towns like Underberg and Himeville might receive some snow, too. The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands could receive some flurries early on Thursday morning.

While the South Coast is unlikely to experience even the smallest flurry of snow, residents should dig out their winter woollies as South African Weather Service is predicting plummeting temperatures all over South Africa.

A steep upper air trough having the potential to cut off and further intensify will result in significantly cooler weather over most parts of the country tomorrow and Thursday.

On the South Coast chilly maximum temperatures of 18C and 14C, tomorrow and Thursday respectively, are expected.Wellington boots might be useful too.

Snow Report South Africa has advised that, as well as bringing snow to our moutainous areas, this system will be accompanied by plenty of rain and people are urged to listen for warnings from their local municipalities and from the South African Weather Service. Disruptions and flooding are possible in many areas.
