Umdoni councillor’s smash, but no grab close encounter

Umdoni Councillor Kenny Armugam points to his broken car window at Scottburgh Mall.

BY THE ‘grace of God’… and alert car guard Erich Beer, an Umdoni councillor was saved from losing a large sum of cash when thieves broke into his car at Scottburgh Mall last Thursday.

Car guards might be an irritation to some, but in this case Cllr Kenny Armugam has singled out Mr Beer as a hero and his saviour.

Eagle eye Erich thought something was up when he saw three men acting suspiciously, scouting  the car park.

“Then they went into the mall. Shortly afterwards, the emerged and I saw one of them smash Cllr Armugam’s car window and try to get in,” said Mr Beer.

He raised the alarm and the robbers fled as mall security reacted within moments.

Cllr Armugam rushed to look in his cubby hole and, to his relief, the cash he had withdrawn earlier that day was still there.

It is believed the robbers were watching and shadowed him to the mall.

“I’m obviously upset about the broken window, but I’m so relieved and thankful to God that my money was not taken,” said Cllr Armugam.

He thanked Mr Beer and also urged others to learn from his experience and be more vigilant.
