UPDATE [WATCH]: Mzamba march – Eastern Cape premier arrives

UPDATE: 4.30pm

MARCHERS have now blocked the whole road and are approaching the entrance to the Wild Coast Sun.

Eastern Cape premier, Phumulo Masualle has reportedly arrived and is trying to defuse the situation.

PEOPLE in the Mzamba area near Port Edward are protesting.

Angry community members dressed in ANC regalia have accused the mayor of Mbizana, Daniswa Mafumbatha and his council of corruption.

They claim that the mayor has pocketed some of the funds allocated for the upgrade of the R61 between the Wild Coast and Bizana, and also that some 4 000 RDP houses meant for residents of Ward 24 had been allocated to people in another ward.

Sources say the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan reportedly reflects that the houses have been built, but add this is not the case.

The protest has caused one lane of the road near the Mzamba police station to be closed for a two kilometre stretch.
