The Herald received a complaint that sewage was flowing into the Uvongo River, but when the Herald reporter arrived, it became clear that it  had not yet reached the river.

A call was made to communication officer, Sphelele Cele, who immediately made contact with technicians and plumbers. Within five minutes the reporter was surrounded by technicians from Ugu.

Spokesman for Ugu District Municipality, France Zama, said the bowling green pump station had experienced a mechanical failure involving a delivery pipe coupling that had come off.

“The mechanical team attended and resolved this problem immediately after it was reported. Vacuum Tanker Service trucks were also brought in to assist with minimising the overflow.

This was followed by a site visit by our environmental health services team, which conducted investigations and certified that no sewage had overflowed into the river, as it was a minor incident,” said Mr Zama.
