Perfect fives at Prelim Masters

PLAYERS in the Preliminary Masters produced some brilliant bowls at Riverside last weekend.

Flawless records with scores of perfect fives saw Margate BC’s Franci Philpott, AMBC’s Hilary Holmes and Umtentweni’s Simon Schaaij win their respective sections while Riverside’s Ian Kalil gained top spot in his section.

These players gain automatic entry to the KBA Masters to be played at the end of September.

The Greenkeepers’ Tournament will be played at The Bell on Wednesday, August 16. Champion of Champions will be played at Riverside on August 26 and 27.


THE Golden Moon Spur and Peter Bennett 2-4-2 mixed pairs played last Wednesday was won by Janet Venter and Ally Weir.

Runners-up were Brian and Pam Cole-Cook. 50/50 board went to Dice Graaff.

GP Security sponsors the mixed pairs tomorrow (4th). The Tops Port Edward men’s pairs will take place on the original date of Sunday, August 6 and the SuperSpar Port Edward two-bowl mixed trips will be played on Wednesday, August 9.


MIXED trips sponsored by Cutting Edge and Blue Waters Pub was won by Marie Coetzer, with Callie and Estelle Quinn.

Second were Corrie Smit with Mike and Vell Mannion. Session went to Derick Cilliers, Astrid Jackson and Jenny Isemonger.

Winning the Restoration Cup bowls trophy at Port Shepstone CC last weekend were (from left) Eddie Fann, Julie Ross and Caroline Harris.

Next competition is the Tiago’s Open Flame this Friday (4th).


WINNERS of the Green Chilli vouchers for the Thursday tabs comp were Trevor Heywood, André Audibert and Alison Dinning.

Winners of the Mugg & Bean open 2-4-2 were Alan and Ann Gibson.

Runners-up were Ron Canning and Yvonne Bausek. Session to Gerry Davey and Derek McKechnie.

50/50 winner was Ross Ferguson. Social bowls every Sunday at 9am.

THE JL Panelbeaters Novice Invitational Pairs was played this last weekend, wherein the top novices in the district chose a skip to partner them in a two-bowl pairs challenge.

Twelve couples, from as far away as AMBC in Pennington and Banners Rest, met for a two-day event played along the Pro 10 format.

After five matches the top two teams – Fred Hutchins and Gina George (AMBC) and Nikki Coetzee and Jenny Rawlins (PSCC) – were tied on 315.

After the final round Fred’s team had a good win in the sixth round and came away winners.

Nikki’s team were runners-up. Only one point separated the third, fourth and fifth places.

Third place went to Rentie Stevens and Arthur Seager (Hibberdene) and fourth to Dennis Rehbock and Martiens Olivier (MCC).


THE club hosted 56 bowlers recently, taking on Amanzimtoti BC in an annual challenge.

Toti were victorious, but PEBC then went on to win the annual Kinsey Motors inter-club competition against Banners Rest and Munster last Tuesday 26th.

John Keppler and Hazel Delaney won the sponsored mixed pairs last Friday.

Barry Payn and Phillipa Rowney were the runners-up and Grant and Lyn Walton won the session prize.

A very busy week ended with the Warwick Wealth Day last Saturday.

Excelling at the Kingfisher Bowling Association’s Preliminary Masters tournament by winnig their respective divisions are (from left) Simon Schaaij, Hilary Holmes, Ian Kalil and Franci Philpott.

Bowlers, including some players trying the sport for the first time, enjoyed the exciting new ‘golf day’ format used.

Marianne van Buuren finished runner-up in her section of the KBA Preliminary Masters.


IT was quite a hectic weekend of bowls. In the KBA novice pairs, Jenny Rawlins and Nikki Coetzer excelled, winning silver.

The event was the Restoration Cup, sponsored by Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach, and the club was packed to the nines, with 16 bowls teams in action.

Winners were Eddie Fann, Caroline Harris and Julie Ross. Second were Riaan, Des and Ryno van der Berg. What a sight to behold as deliberate distractive tactics were used.

The best dressed prize went deservingly to Helen de Jong.


WELL done to Maureen Muller and Shane Nienaber, winners of the Food Lover’s mixed 2-4-2.

Runners-up were Jo and Martiens Olivier. Sessions, Adriana Peens and Attie Ackerman, Anji and Graham Gold.

Next sponsored competition is the Cupboard Value women’s day open pairs next Wednesday (9th) morning and afternoon.


RENE Jover, Trebla Lansdell and Monika Zunker won the Wolf Security open trips held last week.

Runners-up were Steve Rennie, Aubrey Hood and John Keppler.

Session prizes went to Ina Malan, Carl Volker and Chris Allen, as well as Heather Roberts, Sean Larkins and Brent Addison. 50/50 to Trebla Lansdell.

Congratulations to Mal Sheppard and Elliot Nqoko on each winning their club singles tournaments.

Both now go forward to the KBA Champ of Champs on August 26 and 27. Mariner’s open fours today (3rd) in the morning.


BOB Moroney and Lyn Harris won the in-house Fruit & Veg competition last Monday.

Runners up were Don and Shirley Russouw. Session to Artur Lopes and Alan Wallace.

Harbour View SuperSpar women’s trips was won by Vell Mannion, Annette Suther and Elena Frizelle.

Runners-up were Marie Coetzer, Barbara Gradwell and Mada Lindeque.

Session to Tammy Gibbons, Daphne Hounsell and Kitty Cochman.

Southport Service Station mixed trips winners were Mike Mannion, Vell Mannion and Susan Delpech.

Runners-up were Richard Cochman, Hennie Greyling and Kitty Cochman.

South Coast Herald mixed 2-4-2 next Thursday (10th).


CONDOLENCES to family and friends of Sandy Speller-Burls who died last Wednesday. She will be sadly missed.

Orcas mixed trips winners were Luke Pohl, Johannie Theron and Ryan Keys.

Runners-up were Brian Sapsford, Tammy Gibbons and Trevor Maine. Second session went to Claude Ching, Gail Newby and Maggs Schmidt.

Next sponsored competition is Captain’s Anchor mixed fours this Friday (4th). ‘Day at the Races’ this Saturday (5th) is open to all so bring a friend, bowler or non-bowler. Entry fee is R20.


THE recent cricket match between Umtentweni and Southport was won by the Umtentweni teams.

Astrid Jackson and Nellie Davies won the Wimpy women’s pairs from runners-up Desiree Krause and Margie Randall with Annette Suther and Elena Frizelle winning the session prize.

Tammy Gibbons, Jan Scholtz, Trevor Main and Pat Bird won the club/Wimpy mixed fours from Peter Browning, Astrid Jackson, Peter Marsh and Nellie Davies.

Session prize went to Tony Johnson, Annette Suther, Len Rossner and Elena Frizelle.

Geoff and Tina Barbour won the Harbour View SuperSpar mixed pairs from runners-up Derick Cilliers and Molly Williams, while the session prize went to Jack and Dalene van der Berg.

Next event is the Schooner’s mixed trips on Monday (7th).


GARY Hess and Dawn Oehley won the Hopden’s Kwikspar mixed 2-4-2 last week from Bill and Nelia Reed.

Sessions went to Hermann and Sharon Scheinberg and to Carl Volker and Rosalie Bloom. Betty Bolton won the the 50/50.

Next competitions are Hibiscus Brokers mixed trips (10th) and Martin Electronics Men’s 2-4-2 (17th).

Food Lover’s Market drawn mixed trips this Saturday (5th) at 1.15pm. RAC Draw and bring and braai will be this Friday (4th).
