Greens were just too smooth at SA Championships

Jason Gilliver

WORD back from our women who went up to Gauteng to play in the SA Champs was that the courses they played on at Randpark Golf Club, namely Fire Thorn and Bush Willow, are absolutely stunning.

They all reckon they would have played much better if it weren’t for the slickness of the greens, not something our girls are used to down here in KwaZulu-Natal!

Putting on a mirror-like surface is not easy, since our girls are used to the slower and slightly more damp conditions. This was, apparently, their downfall.

Nonetheless, they all had a wonderful time and are all very happy to be back in the warmer climes of KZN! Well done to you all; your respective clubs are very proud of your achievements.

From all at Umkomaas Golf Club, may we wish young Jason Gilliver from Scottburgh Golf Club, all the very best in the USA’s golfing arena.

As with Tim Clark and Garth Mulroy, we will be watching Jason’s progress with great interest. Go forth and do well, young man!

The club welcomed Mike and Magda Espach once again, as well as Trix van Rensburg and Piet van Graan, to the Individual Stableford competition on Wednesday.

The winner was Simon van den Bosch on a score of 39 points with John Thompson in second spot with 37 points. Visitor Trix van Rensburg went home with the third prize, counting out Keith Vergottini into fourth place – both on 36 points.

The ever popular Alliance League was the competition on Saturday, June 10. Club captain Barrie Taylor welcomed visitors, Richard Thompson and Adrian Clarke, to the club and competition at prize-giving.

The winners, on a score of 93 points, were  the ‘Die Hards’ – Rob Mathias, Simon van den Bosch, Chris Viljoen and Jimmy Pickavance with the ‘Naidoos’ – Bruce Sutcliffe, Kuben Naidoo, Sean Prendergast and Chris Pillay – taking second place with 92 points.

In third slot were the ‘Mambas’ – Barrie Taylor, Peter Williamson, Jacques Kirstein and Viv Naicker – counting out the ‘Chancers’ – both teams on 90 points.

Jimmy Pickavance won the jackpot kitty with his 12 points – the hidden birdie (13th hole) will be carried over to next weekend. There were three two-clubs, all on the fourth hole, from Viv Naicker, Jacques Hulley and Devlyn Fraser.

Well done, guys! The attendance draw would have been won if Denise Nell had stayed for prize-giving but that, too, will be carried over to next week.

The Sardine Run is here at last and starts on Thursday, June 15 to June 17 – three days of wonderful golf on three beautiful golf courses.

Welcome to all the players participating in the ‘Run’ – good luck to you all, have a wonderful time and enjoy our fabulous KZN hospitality. Our hope is that the ‘little silver fish’ in the ocean coincide with the tournament, which would be a first!

The ‘Sunday Bash’ was played last weekend in rather windy conditions but all the guys were up for the challenge! This competition is open to all handicapped players, so any interested players may come along at 10am to the club (on a date to be announced later), meeting under the ‘lapa’ – you’re more than welcome to play.

The winners of last Sunday’s game were – first Dumisani on 39 points followed by Hensford, counting out Maxwell into third spot – both with 37 points.

The competition between the players is quite intense so, if you’re up for some real competition, pit your skills along with these guys! You’re sure to find out how good you really are!

Umkomaas Golf Club can now boast a sparkling new golf shop which has been re-vamped, re-painted and is now looking very ‘spiffy’ indeed! This is all thanks to Duncan Fraser and Lesley Fraser for all the hard work they put into this miraculous transformation! Thank you both so very much!

The ‘Geriatrics’ and Six-Pin on Friday as well as KidzGolf on Saturday will not be happening this weekend due to the Sardine Run – for the ‘Gerries’ please call Graham at 083-3255705 or Keith at 083-3055740 to find out where they are playing on Friday.
