From the Word: Rebuild the wall

Nehemiah chapter 8 vs 10: Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

NEHEMIAH was a character in the Old Testament who stood up and was counted in a time of need.

At that point in Jewish history he was a cup bearer to King Artaxerxes in Shushan. (Persia).

News had come to Nehemiah that Jerusalem lay in ruins, its wall was broken down, and the people were vulnerable to attack from enemies.

He obtained permission from the king to go back to his homeland to repair the wall.

He manages to pull off something quite extraordinary in a very short space of time, something that no one else had seemingly the will or the way to do.

But it wasn’t always easy.

During the rebuilding, the Jews were initially mocked by their enemies.

When the work made startling progress, the alarmed enemies then threatened them.

At one point, the Jews had to be prepared fight and build at the same time.

There were enemies who did not like the idea of a restored Jerusalem.

It was something which would bring financial security to the Jews and with it a change in the balance of power in the region.

Eventually, the work was done and the wall was in place.

After this Nehemiah gets Ezra the priest to read from the Book of the Law.

The people are cut to the heart when they hear the words. They begin to cry.

However, they are then encouraged to stop mourning, but to celebrate the day as holy unto God, and to eat and drink and share their food with those that did not have.

That “the joy of the Lord is their strength”.

You can apply some of these principles to your own life.

If your ‘wall’ is broken down, get it fixed. Most likely you’ll need some help from others to get this done; it depends on the damage.

Secondly, return to God and His way of doing things.

And then celebrate. Once again, God’s heart to bless His people becomes evident.
