Popular Tweni fruit vendor murdered at his Louisiana home

Murdered: Dhanukshari John Singh (89) a pioneer of Louisiana, was attacked at his home last Friday. He died as a result of head injuries he sustained during the attack.

AS long as many South Coasters can remember, when driving along Commercial Road, Umtentweni, one would see an elderly man selling fruit from his white bakkie.

Since last Friday morning the well-known fruit seller, who has been making a honest living for many years, has no longer been seen at his selling spot. Dhanukshari John Singh (89) and his daughter were attacked at their home in Louisiana last Friday at about 10am.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Mr Singh was at home with his daughter when four men entered and assaulted them.

“His daughter was stabbed with a fork and her father was also assaulted. The intruders then started to ransack the house and fled with goods,” she said.

Both victims were taken to hospital. Mr Singh’s daughter was later discharged. However Mr Singh remained in a coma in the intensive care unit and died on Tuesday morning this week.

A post-mortem was performed on Wednesday which revealed that Mr Singh had died as a result of head injuries.

“Originally a house robbery case was opened, but the charges will be changed to murder, attempted murder and house robbery,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Detective Warrant Officer Lami Mjweni is the investigating officer. No arrests have yet been made.

On hearing of Mr Singh’s death, Captain Cecil Kodi, who is very involved in the Umtentweni Community Policing Forum, was shocked. “He was a honest man who made an honest living selling fruit to passers-by. He was liked by the community and he will be sorely be missed,” said Captain Kodi.

A family member, Kishore Singh, said his uncle will be missed. “He was a Louisiana pioneer and had been a fruit vendor at this spot for about 40 years,” he said.

Mr Singh’s funeral was held on Wednesday.

He leaves six children, 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
