THERE are a lot of things that you could mention as to why the Thompson Commercial vehicles dealership in Port Shepstone has been so successful, but the number one is probably ‘consistency’.

That’s arguably the main reason the dealership, headed by Richard Thompson, produced finalists in five different categories in the recent UD Trucks national awards.

One finalist is considered better than average, five is quite superb!

* Foreman of the Year: Eddie Hillier.

It was his first year in this category (he was previously a technician) so this was a major achievement.

He was in the top three in the country across all categories (small, medium and large) so to become a finalist in his first year was phenomenal.

* Best Dealer Maintenance Contracts Medium Dealer. Richard Thompson.

This award is based on sales of maintenance plans to truck buyers, or how many plans are sold to new buyers.

This affords the truck operator (and owner) ‘peace of mind’ knowing that there is back-up and support organised in the event something goes wrong with the truck.

Thompson sells it because it strongly believes in its long-term value, and has observed that trucks with the plan tend to be far better performers.

* Best Dealer Parts Medium Dealer: Dennis Schmid.

Dennis is a perennially among the awards and this year was no different.

The award is most certainly not only about selling the most parts, but is also judged strictly on processes and quality.

And obviously, customer satisfaction plays a massive role in this award.

Fail that section, and you’re out.

* Best Dealer Service Medium Dealer: Surdesh Ramsaroop.

He’s another staff member racking up the awards. This award is similar to the parts award in that processes and quality checks need to be closely adhered to.

But Surdesh’s real skills, aside from his genuinely friendly greeting as customers enter the premises, is that he is able to ascertain and understand exactly what the problem is, and give the customer a quick, accurate assessment of what needs to be done and how long it will take.

He greatly helps the customer reduce the effects of ‘downtime’ and this makes all the difference.

* Dealer of the Year Medium Dealer: Richard Thompson.

This was a huge accolade for the dealership.

“Last year we achieved the same thing and our team came together to maintain the high standard. So I take huge pride in my team. We’re over the moon to be among the best in the country.”

He also mentioned the dealership’s many customers and thanked them for their support.

Looking ahead, there’s an exciting upgrade to the medium commercial range, with a number of interesting derivatives coming in June this year.
