Robbers masquerading as cops arrested in Umzinto

CONDUCTING a follow-up operation on April 10, members of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Crime Intelligence successfully traced and arrested suspects wanted for business and house robberies throughout KZN.

The suspects allegedly posed as police officials with firearms and fake police appointment certificates bearing the rank of general. One of the first suspects arrested had been involved in a house robbery at the Mbetheni Informal Settlement in Umzinto in March.

He and two accomplices had robbed a resident of R4 000 in cash as well R100 worth of airtime. The three men had produced appointment certificates and threatened the victim with a gun.

“Further investigations led the police team to Dassenhoek, Mariannhill, Umlazi and Verulam, where a further three suspects were arrested and a Tanfoglio 9mm pistol with 10 live rounds of ammunition, a replica firearm, seven cellphones and three fake police appointment certificates with the rank of general, were among the items recovered,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

So far, these suspects have been positively linked to a case of theft in Umkomaas earlier this month and also to a house robbery in Umlazi.

A date for their appearance in court has not as yet been confirmed.

The suspects are currently being profiled in order to determine whether or not they may be linked to other ongoing cases.

The firearm will be sent for ballistics analysis to establish if it was indeed used in the commission of any other crimes.
