Youth Awards encourage young people to make the most of their opportunities

UGU District Municipality’s youth office launched the Ugu youth awards, with the theme ‘celebrating positive minds’ at St Michael’s Sands Hotel recently.

According to acting municipal manager, Vuyiwe Tsako, the awards, which will be presented at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on  June 10 , seek to recognise young people and the work they’ve done to empower themselves and their communities.

Speaking at the launch, Ms Tsako said they also aimed to provide opportunities which enable young people to become involved in development programmes.

A sum of R535 00 is expected to be spent on the event and on rewarding deserving young people.

Ugu mayor, Mondli Chiliza said youth development formed an integral part of the district’s mandate to make sure young people make progress, as they are the future leaders of the country.

Cllr Chiliza also mentioned that various youth projects such as bursaries and internship programmes, were funded by the municipality to ensure that the youth had access to better opportunities.

Ten categories are expected to be featured in the awards, and application forms for nominations will be made available in all local municipality youth offices. All residents of the Ugu District between the ages of 18 and 25 will be eligible to apply.
