AFTER what proved to be a real battle of the giants at the mixed pairs held recently, the final winners, on a brilliant last end, were Eddie Fann and Gillie Thiele from Port Shepstone, retaining the title they won last year.

The Bell’s Barry Delvin and Daphne Sapsford were very worthy runners-up.

Joint third were Jessica Henderson and Dion van Schalkwyk and Gerry Davey and Franci Philpott, both from Margate.

A note of congratulations and thanks to all 92 entrants – what a great competition, and many thanks to all the host clubs and their staff and members for all their hard work – much appreciated by all at KBA!

The executive would like to wish the interdistrict teams all the best for the tournament next week and safe journeys for those travelling to Cape Town and ‘Maritzburg.

The “B” side finals will be held at Riverside on Friday afternoon.

The monthly Harbour View SuperSpar trips was played last Sunday.

Thanks go to the sponsor, to Len Rossler, Murray Ross and Rastus Reen for the greens and to Gillian Thiele, the hardworking organiser.

Winners on +16 were Keith and Gillian Thiele and Winnie Hess, Runners-up on +12 were Phil Myburgh, Brian Navias and Fred Hitchins and the session prize went to Howard and Elena Frizelle and Caroline Hes.

FRIDAY’S Hibberdene Pharmacy nominated mixed trips was won by Albert and Alida Munnik, with Rentie Stevens.

Second were Brian Pirie, Silvia Pretorius and Napier Verster, who was replaced in the second session by Chris Shone.

Session was won by Danie and Annetjie Human and Cheryl Knight.

Bubbles Bezuidenhout won the ‘Jokers Wild’ for the second time, but did not get the jackpot this time.

The next competition is the Suzuki South Coast drawn trips on Friday afternoon with the ‘cricket’ match against Southport on Sunday, followed by a bring and braai.

WINNERS of Hibiscus Retirement Villages men’s trips were Steve Rennie, Aubrey Hood and John Keppler followed by John Sutton, Hein Bester and Chris Allen.

Sessions went to Brian Hughes, Fred Askham and Bill Parfitt and to Brian Douthwaite, Martiens Olivier and Bill Eccles on a count-out from Graham Fisher, Trebla Bezuidenhout and Brent Addison.

Rennie Geyer won the 50/50.Winners of Hibiscus Insurance Brokers’ mixed trips were Reg Sanders, Dave Garland and Dawn Ingle followed by Hein Bester, Annette Payne and Roy Robertson.

Third were Dereck Schorn with Keith and Maureen Roach and fourth Phillip Audibert, Arnold Ossendryver and Sharon Smith on a count-out from John Sutton, Betty Bolton and Ali Mitchell.

The in-house Hyundai drawn mixed trips will be combined this Saturday (18th) with St Patrick’s Day. Please wear something green.

There will be a ‘bring and share’ afterwards. Tabs in by 1.15pm.

ENGEL & Volkers men’s fours was interrupted by the weather on Friday and the organisers had to take the results after two skins.

There were three teams on 17 + 3. On a shot count-out the eventual winners were Mike Davis, Allen Grey, Tony Hoggins and Fred Hutchinson from AMBC. Runners-up were John Sutton, Denzil Massyn, Gary Hess and Allan Mitchell.

Third were Graham Gold, Mike Prinsloo, Clive Edmundson and Peter MacCarthy. Log leaders at the moment are Brian Douthwaite, Barry Herbert, Martiens Olivier and Hans van der Walt.


BARRY Delvin and Geoff Barbour won the South Coast Herald men’s pairs from Peter Clark and Alan Wallace; third place went to Bez Bezuidenhout and Bruce Hoyer.

The next event is the Wimpy women’s pairs this morning (Thursday 16th).

St Patrick’s Day will be celebrated at the club on Friday 17th with a game starting at 2pm, followed by entertainment organised by Tony Aveyard and team at 5pm for 5.30pm.

The dress is mufti; green is the preferred colour. The club mixed fours will be played on Friday morning, March 24.

THE South Coast Herald mixed pairs 2-4-2 played last Thursday was won by Werner Mody and Ellen Gould.

Second place went to Peet and Susan van Rooyen, with Bob Moroney and Lyn Harris in third spot. The popular Dr D’Arcy men’s trips will take place today (Thursday).

Club members are putting in as much time as possible in the nets in anticipation of the ‘cricket’ game against Hibberdene on Sunday 19th.


NOMADS thanks Margate Country Club for a wonderful day of bowls on Sunday. March 12, for which 24 members turned out.

The competition, sponsored by Orange River Wine Cellars, was won by Jan Huygen, Herman Scheinbeg and Sandy Ferguson with 10+25. Second were Mike Prinsloo, Denise Brass and Myra Doubell (10+17) and third Austin Knollys, Sharon Scheinberg and Lindsey Humphries (9+6).

Sportsman’s prize went to Graham Fisher, Eric Chamier and Tom Doubell (0-25). Nearest to the Jack: Andrey van Niekerk. 50/50: Herman Scheinberg. Spider: Heather Roberts (wine donated by Dina van der Walt). Lucky Draw: Denise Brass and Jan Huygen.

The next outing will be at The Village Bowling Club on April 23, and that will be our AGM at 8.30 for 9am, with a bring and braai after the meeting.


CONGRATULATIONS to the two Margate BC teams of Jessica Henderson and Deon van Schalkwyk, Gerry Davey and Franci Philpott who shared bronze at the KBA mixed pairs.

The Mugg & Bean women’s 2-bowls trips will be played on Friday morning, March 17.

The Spur ‘St Patrick Day’ bowls fun day will take place on Sunday, March 19, starting 9am. Dress in green. There will be lots of prizes and a ‘bring ’n braai’. All welcome.

The next quiz and supper (R40.00pp) will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 6.30pm. The Mugg & Bean open 2-4-2 pairs will take place on Friday, March 24 at 2pm.

THE SuperSpar Port Edward 2-bowl mixed trips played on Wednesday, March 8 was won by Pam and Brian Cole-Cook and Vi Pells, with runners-up Aubrey Hood, Kotie Snyman and Jenny Rennie.

Second session went to Dan Delaney, Dave Banks and Ken Simms and the 50/50 board to Jenny Rennie. The next sponsored competition will be the Banners Rest mixed pairs 2-4-2 on Wednesday, March 22.
