UPDATE: Woman hijacked and murdered – ‘No bail, no fine for murder’

MAXWELL Phehlukwayo (60) appeared briefly in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Thursday), charged with conspiring to murder Zobanani Jalubani (41).

Magistrate Elise Coetzer postponed the case for bail application.

Mr Phehlukwayo, who has pleaded not guilty to the charge, is being represented by Attorney Ryan Moors, while the state prosecutor is Thengi Vuso.

The murder, believed to be politically motivated, attracted a large group of chanting protesters outside the court. Some of the women waved placards which read: ‘No bail, no fine for murder’.

Sanele Gumede (27) and Ayanda Mdangaye (30) were linked to her murder and pleaded guilty to the crime.

They were both sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and five years for kidnapping in the in the Pietermaritzburg High Court last month. Gumede received a further 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery, while Mdangaye was given 20 years for robbery.


UPDATE: January 23 4pm

THE murdered woman has been identified as Zobanani  Jalubani (41).

Mrs Jalubani, who was found dead in the forest at Braemer Farm near Port Edward, used to transport schoolchildren to a primary school in Manzamhlophe Ward, Izingolweni.

Police have now arrested three men and three women in connection with the crime.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Port St John’s Court today on the charge of being in possession of suspected stolen property.

They will face charges of murder and kidnapping in the  Izingolweni Court tomorrow (Tuesday).


UPDATE: 11am

THE hijacked woman used to transport children in the Izingolweni the area.

Police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka said police have now arrested three suspects in connection with the kidnapping and murder of the 41-year-old woman.

“Her vehicle was fitted with a tracking device. It was traced to Port St Johns after her family last night reported to police that she had not arrived home. The vehicle had been smashed,” he said.

Meanwhile, community members near Port Edward stumbled upon the woman’s body at around 4am today and contacted the police.

Police are investigating a murder, kidnapping and robbery docket.

It is believed that two men are from the Eastern Cape area and the other from Izingolweni.

The men are due to appear in court on Monday.

No children were caught up in the incident.



THE body of a woman who had been hijacked in Izingolweni last night has been found.

Police are investigating a case of murder after her body was discovered in Bizana.

Two people have been arrested and the woman’s vehicle recovered.

An official statement is awaited from police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka.
