Near-drowning victim thanks his ‘heroes’

Hero Shannon Horn (middle) is thanked by near-drowning victim Henry Singh and his wife Betty.

TWO brothers who were at the Umzimkulu River mouth with their family scattering a loved one’s ashes on New Year’s Day are now heroes after saving an elderly man from drowning.

Palmview grandfather Henry Singh (67) was at the river having a meal and when  he went down to the water to wash his hands, he slipped and fell in.

Mr Singh can count his lucky stars that Norman Subramoney (47), formerly from Margate, was walking past and spotted Mr Singh floating in the water. Mr Subramoney tried to pull him to safety using a stick, but was not successful. He ran towards the ‘Block’ to find help and a family saw his panic.

Mr Singh’s granddaughter Vashna Singh,  said Shannon Horn and his family, who were on their way to immerse their late mother’s ashes, heard Mr Subramoney’s cry for help.

“Shannon left his family and begun running towards my grandfather.

“Without a second thought, he and his brother, Neville, selflessly jumped into the water. Fighting the high tide and with the help of a few other people, they managed to pull my grandfather to shore,” said Ms Singh.

Shannon’s aunt Lynn-Dee Barath administered CPR while everyone prayed, as they waited for medical assistance.

Mr Singh spent three days in ICU on a ventilator, fighting for his life. On the fourth day he was moved to the general ward and although still weak, he was discharged from hospital on the Thursday.

“On behalf of my family, we would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Mr Subramoney, the Horn family, bystanders, the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, Med-Evac, Protection Services and Port Shepstone Regional Hospital for their assistance in saving my grandfather’s life,” said Ms Singh.
