DEA ‘trashes’ Umdoni manager

The Humberdale waste site.

POSSIBLY facing a fine of up to R10-million or a jail sentence of up to 10 years, Umdoni Municipality has no other option but to resolve the issues which have been left to spiral out of control at the Humberdale dump site over the past year.

The Department of Environmental Affairs stated that Umdoni municipality manager, Xolani Luthuli, could even be slapped with both the fine and sentence, adding that the municipality has 14 days to meet the requirements.

The Department of Environmental Affairs demanded that daily waste compaction resume, access paths be cleared and that the site be operated in an effective manner.

Failure to comply with the DEA’s conditions within the 14 days’ notice period, will result in the DEA taking further action against Mr Luthuli.
