Sage advice for young men

LEADERSHIP, business and media ethics were part of the discussions at the ‘Black Suit Gentlemen’s Club’ hosted by the  PhumlaniM foundation at Margate Hotel last Sunday.

According to organisers, the club seeks to change the behavior and thinking of young men on the South Coast by equipping them with life and business skills.

Former political editor for Caxton newspaper, the Citizen, Cedric Mboyisa, gave insight on using media for business purposes and how the media works.

Mr Mboyisa told young men that the media was not their enemy, but a tool to help them build their brand image and manage their reputations well.

Having a brand means you need to choose carefully the type of media you use to promote your business. You need to do a background check on a newspaper and the values it carries. Using a credible paper to advertise your business means you take your brand seriously, – Cedric Mboyisa

Businessman Sethu Sidzamba gave expert advice on choosing careers which benefit communities. “We need young leaders who will identify problems in their communities and choose careers which will be part of the solution.”

Ugu municipality youth practitioner Arthur Mbhele put emphasis on the fact that government was not corrupt, but certain individuals within the scope of government were corrupt.

“If the entire government was corrupt, no one would get any services. Certain workers put self interests first.”

Mr Mbhele also gave points on how to become a selfless leader.

Black Management Forum president Angel Bayeni gave advice on what it meant to be a gentleman, from a woman’s perspective.

“Being a gentlemen is not only about helping a woman tie her shoe, but about having the ability to speak life into her,” said Ms Bayeni. She also said that it was better to lead from behind so one could identify those going astray, rather than being in the forefront.
