Revenge the motive for murder

UVONGO flea market vendor Pradeep Mahabeer (59) was murdered for revenge, the Ramsgate High Court heard on Monday.

Jean Pierre Haggard (25) and Riaan Marais (27), from Sea Park, were found guilty of the murder, as well as theft.

Mahabeer, from Marburg, was reported missing on July 2 last year. His body was found several weeks later in Umkomaas. He had been stabbed multiple times.

Haggard and Marais blamed Mahabeer for some ‘ill fortune’ suffered by Marais.

The latter then enlisted Haggard to help him exact revenge.

They questioned him and left him in his vehicle while they went to buy cigarettes.

They then returned to his house where Haggard held Mahabeer down and Marais stabbed him several times in the chest with a steak knife.

They stole the deceased’s cellphone, a video and CCTV camera, a glucose tester and a television before leaving with Mahabeer’s body in the vehicle.

They drove to Umkomaas where they dumped the body.

Mahabeer’s car was later found in Gauteng, where the two were also arrested.

Marais led detectives to a site close to the Umkomaas River where Mahabeer’s skeletal remains were found.

Sentencing is due on Thursday.
