Bogus doctors arrested in Sheppie

Arrested: Constable Lulu Holwane and Warrant Officer “PC” Naicker with one of the suspects.

THERE was drama in Port Shepstone CBD this morning when police arrested three foreign nationals from a mid African country.

They were arrested for impersonating medical practitioners and offering their services to perform illegal abortions.

“The three, who are all in their mid thirties, were arrested at two different premises which they had rented,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

She added that police from the Public Order Policing Unit and Port Shepstone Crime Prevention had conducted an undercover operation. The officers were assisted by personnel from Home Affairs and Department of Health.

“A police agent bought a tablet to promote abortion for R500 from one of the so-called doctors. One of the suspects has temporary documents allowing him to be in the country, but these documents expire in May this year.”

The other two suspects could not produce any legal documents.

Police confiscated a number of pamphlets and herbs, instruments and tablets as well as ointments which will be sent for analysis.

The three face charges under the Contravention of Choice on termination of Pregnancy Act 92/1996 Section 3 (1), 10 (a) (b) (2) and two of them will also face additional charges under the Illegal Immigration Act.

They are due to appear in the Port Shepstone Court on Monday.
