Wedding on a budget

PLANNING a wedding can be overwhelming and very costly. If you are on a strict budget, we have some great, affordable DIY ideas for you.

Lanterns and fairy lights

The glow from paper lanterns fairy lights at a wedding reception is magical and a chic way to bring light to your venue or outdoor space. For tons of charm add ribbons to the lanterns and for a daytime wedding, you don’t even need lights inside.

Gorgeous chair decorations

Decorate chairs with wide ribbon in pastel shades. Tie to the top of the chairs and for added style tie the ribbons together and add some fresh flowers.

Framed blackboard wedding program

Paint over a large, salvaged mirror with chalkboard paint. An idea: write on the menu or even a message to welcome your guests.

Mason jar cocktails

None of your guests will miss an open bar with a gorgeous display of colourful jar cocktails.

Doilies and twine table settings

Impress your guests with an elegant idea using paper doilies and twine on the tables.

Bowtie napkins

For a dash of sophistication, fold the napkins into a rectangle and cinch the center with a matching, or contrasting coloured ribbon.

Colourful candlelight

These candle votives couldn’t be easier to make. Pick up a case of glass votives from your nearest floral wholesaler or gift shop. Scribble watery paint on the inside of clear glass candle holders. When they’re dry, place the votive inside…and voilá, romance is in the air!

Hanging sunflower pomanders

All you need to create this happy-feel pomanders are fake sunflowers, styrofoam balls, wire and ribbon or twine from the craft store. You could replace the sunflowers with roses for a more sophisticated look. To make the ribbon handle for the flower ball fold a piece of ribbon in half, and tie it in a knot. Take a piece of wire and bend it around the ribbon, then push it into the styrofoam balls before adding the sunflowers.

If I could reach up and hold a star for every time you’ve made me smile, the entire evening sky would be in the palm of my hand.
