South Coast youngsters excel at surf contest in Umhlanga

AFTER the howling South Easter that prevailed most of the previous week, the Lizzard Hurricane Surf contest got off to a perfect start at Bronze Beach Umhlanga –  with only a gentle South West  breeze, and an ocean that offered up sizeable 4-6 ft wave faces and a contestable 2-3 foot bowl wave.

Close on seventy surfers took part in 28 heats throughout the day and there were many stand outs.

In the Open Men Division, Justin Sykes opened up with a high scoring 7.5 on a left  in the final and beat his rivals Kyle Lane, Matt Kruger and Nathan Wallace respectively.  It was a very close call for second and third between Kyle and Matt but all surfers gave it their all.  Justin Sykes from Salt Rock was also voted the ‘Surfer of the Contest’.

In the very competitive masters division it was series leader Carl Roux who took top honors again with a heat total of 9.5.  Rein Van de Wall was close on his heels with a total of nine points. Chris Knutsen placed third and Mike Frew placed fourth.

Jaime Irvine got victory in the low scoring U18 boys final.  He beat surfers Saxton Randall, Jordon Boshoff, Tide Lee Ireland and Richan Van Reenen into the placings.

Westbrook Surfer Gabi Lailvaux opted to surf out at the backline to secure her win,  while her opponents Gaby Herbst, Kirra Attfield, and Maya Potgieter preferred the bowl wave on the inside.  Gaby was the decisive winner in the U12 girls ahead of Louise Lepront, Maya and Kirra.

Kirra, and her friend Maya, both from Shelly Beach, did very well. Kirra is 10 years old and came 3rd in the U16 girls and 4th in the U12 Girls. While, Maya Potgieter  also did nicely,  she came 3rd in U12 girls and 4th in U16 girls.

In the U14 boys division it was very close for first between Jordon Boshoff and Julian Carbonal.  However it was Jordan that took the win ahead of Julian, then Luc Lepront, Cameron Jacob, and Evan Spittal.

Young Jordan from Shelly Beach, not only won the U14 boys division but also came 3rd in the U18 boys. While, another new young surfer Evan from Ramsgate came 5th in the U14 Boys.

One of the fiercest divisions is the u12 boys and these children paddle out with such determination for success.  Run away winner Thor Knutsen is showing why he is the son of 3 x world Champion surfer Chris Knutsen and took the win with a 2.5 point excess in the totals.  Just one point separated the placed surfers Evan Peyios, Julian Carbonal and Owen Slack.

With ten little boys entered into the novice division, it was Damien Frew who scored a total of 11.5 (with the help of his Dad Mike doing the caddying) to take out the win with Jarod Pretorius in second, Indie Van de Wall third, and Trent Louriero fourth.

It was an exceptionally good day with perfect weather  and the waves being tricky but plentiful.  Families all brought their picnic baskets and enjoyed time on the grass lawns at the beautiful Bronze Beach.

Wave Wizards Club Chairman Jestyn Viljoen said he would just like to thank Anthony Molgowa and his team of lifeguards for always making us feel welcome and being so helpful.  “Thanks to Lizzard and Hurricane Surf for the great prizes and continued support and to all the parents, family and surfers for supporting our great Wave Wizards Club.”

The next event will be on November 5 at Bronze.  For more info you can visit our facebook page Wave Wizards Surf Club’.
