From the bowling greens: Great turnout for mixed bowls tournament

MIXED BOWLS

THE Lower South Coast Mixed Bowls Tournament was hosted by Southbroom, Munster, Port Edward and Banners Rest bowling clubs last week.

Winners were Peter and Lyn Garret from Westville Country Club, followed by Danie and Liz van der Post from Groenkloof in Pretoria.

Third spot was taken by Mike and Sue Clark from Randburg, followed by locals John Keppler (Banners Rest) and Leoni Booth (Port Edward).

Wrapping up the top five were Ron Geale and Lyn Peens of Honeydew.

Session prizes were won by Robbie Fox and Joyce Williams (1st), Kathy Lightening and Colin le Grange (2nd), Piet Ferreira and Joan Beach (3rd), Heni and Helen Nel (4th) and Andreas van der Linde and Linda Whitton (5th).

Last year there was a field of 40 pairs, which was a great success.

The response for this year’ tournament was overwhelming and a full complement of 60 teams entered.

A total of 37 teams from outside the Kingfisher Bowling District entered, some as far away as Pretoria and Mosselbaai.

An extra bowling green at the Wild Coast Sun was used. The prize-giving was held at Port Edward Country Club.

Lucky hamper draws were won by Sue Padgett, Darryl Saunders, Vernon Clements, Rob Lyle and Janet Venter.

Sportsman’s prize went to Darryl Saunders and Dagmar van Rensburg.

BANNERS REST

WELL done to the organisers, sponsors and five lower South Coast clubs on a very successful mixed pairs competition which ended on a high note last Friday with prizes awarded to the top five, plus daily sessions.

Congratulations to John Keppler (Banners Rest) and Leoni Booth (Port Edward) on finishing in fourth place.

Entries are invited to the KBA men’s and women’s sevens leagues which start in November.

HIBBERDENE

WINNERS of the Tiago’s Open Flame nominated mixed trips were Norman and Judy Aiston, with Rentjie Stevens.

Runners-up were Werner Mody, Nora Swart and Nossie Patterson. Session to Paul Grutter, Martin Rautenbach and Joey Venter.

Well done to Brian Pirie on his bronze medal in the KBA Champion of Champions men’s singles.

Spring Day, held last Sunday, was well patronised. Catering was excellent.

Hibberdene Pharmacy drawn trips this Friday (8th).

MUNSTER

THE season ended with social bowls, men against women, sponsored by Spar.

Leading women were Penny Hood, Margaret Moakes and Lesley Lawson, while the leading men were Danie van der Post, Cliff Moakes and Willie Smith.

Overall, the women triumphed.

30-club draw winners were 1st Llewell Angus, 2nd Ivan Van den Berg, 3rd Jean Longdon, 4th Rita Zietsman.

Prize-giving luncheon is on Saturday, September 16 at 1pm. R40. Contact Margaret to book.

NOMADS

NEXT outing is at Southbroom BC this Sunday (10th) from 8.30am.

All members are welcome to join the Nomads on the day. There will be a bring and braai after the game.

PORT EDWARD

THE club is closed for the refurbishment of the green as of last Saturday, when the women prevailed in the annual Men vs Ladies competition.

Congratulations to John Keppler and Leoni Booth for coming fourth in the second annual LSC 2-4-2 competition.

Prize-giving is provisionally scheduled for Thursday, September 28 at the club at 5pm.

Any change to the date and/or time will be published beforehand.

PSCC

KINGFISHER Bowling Association hosted a fund-raiser last Saturday, which was very well attended with representation from most of the clubs on the coast.

The winner was Ferro van Greunen from Gerhard Waldeck.

The Harbour View SuperSpar trips was won by Flippie Geyer, Lesley and Kevin Lancaster.

Runners-up were Gerhard Waldeck, Rodney Winnan and Gerard Creral.

Session prize went to Eddie Fann, Howard Frizelle and Caroline Harris.

SOUTHPORT

SHIRLEY Russouw and Vic Holder won the Fruit and Veg in-house 2-4-2.

Runners-up were Fanie Strydom and Tom Semple. Session prize went to Mike King and Kitty Cochman.

Winners of the Suzuki South Coast women’s trips were Annette Suther, Lyn Coetzer and Julie Ross.

Runners-up were Jane Massam, Shirley Russouw and Lyn Harris.

Session prize went to Bubbles Bezuidenhout, Sylvia Pretorius and Nossie Patterson.

Harbour View SuperSpar 3-2-1 mixed trips winners were Arthur Lopes, Tammy Gibbons and Ian Gordon.

Second place went to Geoff Kelleher, Jane Massam and Cosmos Gumede.

THE BELL

BARRY Krause will stand as president of the club for another year.

There was a very nice turnout for the AGM last Saturday.

Other committee members elected are: Sharolyn Dacey (vice president, Annette Scott, Maureen Head, Johannie Theron, Luke Pohl, Willy Knott, Margie Randall and Phil Viljoen.

Many thanks to the outgoing committee for all their hard work.

TWENI

THANKS to Mike Davies and Tony Aveyard for organising a very enjoyable horse tacing evening.

As always, the meal provided by Top Marx was superb. Next competition is Schooner’s mixed trips next Monday (11th).

All the best to the three teams playing in the Interclub women’s trips at Southport, as well as to all the members playing in the KBA women’s and men’s fours.

VILLAGE

THERE was a good turnout for the RAC draw and braai last Friday. Don’t forget the roast lunch at the club this Sunday (10th).

Next competitions are Hibiscus Insurance Brokers mixed trips next Thursday (14th), followed by Martin Electronics men’s 2-4-2 on Thursday 21st.

The Food Lover’s Market drawn mixed trips was won by Bill Parfitt and Trevor Smith (pairs only) followed by Barry Christie, Garth Philpott and Lucas Landman and then by Dave Garland, Aubrey Watson and Bill Reed.
