Spar Margate Week bowls a huge success – once again

ANOTHER very successful annual Margate Week bowls tournament came to a conclusion last Friday. A big thanks to all who took part, both on and off the greens.

Thanks to the sponsors, Hibiscus Retirement Villages and Spar. There were 40 teams in the women’s section and 34 in the men’s section.

Winning the women’s section were Four of a Kind, namely Colleen Piketh, Ellen Cawker, Brenda Webb and Jessica Henderson.

In the men’s section, champions were The Underestimated team comprising Wayne van Nikkelen-Kuyper, Riaan van den Berg, Denzil Massyn and Brian Pirrie.

HIBBERDENE

THE winners of the Tiago’s Open Flame drawn trips played last Friday were John Hoyer, Bernard Carpenter and Albert Munnik.

Second place went to Annetjie Human, Bubbles Bezuidenhout and Helene Oosthuizen. Session prizes went to Alida Munnik, Judy Aiston and Sydney Bradbury.

Next competition is Hibberdene Pharmacy mixed trips this Friday (12th).

MARGATE BC

SOCIAL bowls is played every Sunday morning, starting at 9am. This Sunday (14th) will be special fun day for Mother’s Day, with prizes galore.

Quiz night and supper (R60pp) will be on May 17 at 6.30pm. Duty: Office – James Mitchell; tea – Franci Philpott and Yvonne James.

BANNERS REST

GP SECURITY mixed pairs winners were Penny and Aubrey Hood, from runners-up Rod and Mary Phelps.

Second session went to Peter Bennett and Jaye Russell and the 50/50 board to Jaye Russell.

Winners of the Tops Port Edward men’s pairs were Peter Bennett and Joe Ashworth.

Placed second were Rod Phelps and Graeme Russell and third, Dave Hume and Leigh Warner. The 50/50 board was won by Rod Phelps.

MARGATE CC

THE JL Panelbeaters novice invitational pairs competition will take place at the club this weekend.

Overall winners and other leading novices who performed well in the recent KBA Novice Singles were invited to bring a skip from their club and compete in this prestigious annual two-bowl pairs competition, over two days.

Invited players are Nikita Coetzer (Port Shepstone CC), Ferro van Greunen (Southbroom), Dina van der Walt (Margate CC), Dennis Rehbock (Margate CC), Rentie Stevens (Hibberdene), Trevor Main (Tweni), Heidi Bracegirdle (Margate BC), Darryl Saunders (Banners Rest), Barbara Henderson (AMBC), Penny Ridgway (Sezela), Peter Giblin (Tweni) and Ron Vink (Margate BC).

Clubs are encouraged to bring supporters to cheer on and support their new talent.

MUNSTER

WINNERS of the High Rock men’s pairs were Rick Harding and Lizette Greeff.

Runners-up were Rob Lyle and Val Smith. Second session went to Martiens and Rita Zietsman. Board to Val Smith.

30-Club winners were: 1 Louise Dry; 2 Barry Fowler; 3 Martiens Zietsman; 4 David Lindley.

PORT EDWARD

ROD and Mary Phelps, with Graeme Russell, won the SuperSpar open trips from Peter Ziervogel, John Keppler and Leigh Warner.

Session went to Val Smith, Frank Foley and Yvonne Fillis. Board to Mike Gower.

At Margate Week, Marianne van Buuren, Leoni Booth, Mary Warner and Sariena Ziervogel finished eighth overall, but won the session prize on Thursday morning.

Club drawn mixed trips winners were Don Saunders, Val Smith and Sariena Ziervogel.

NOMADS

NEXT Nomads outing is at Southbroom BC this Sunday (14th) at 8.30am for 9am.

All welcome to join in on the day. There will be a bring and braai after the game.

PORT SHEPSTONE

CONGRATULATIONS to Roy Anderson, Mark Smith, Howard Frizelle and Kevin Lancaster on coming third overall in the Margate Week.

The Harbour View SuperSpar trips, which saw a record 14 teams take part, was won by Dennis Graham, Johnny Guy and John Bloch.

Runners-up were Hew Hodgson, Irna Eigermann and Daphne Hounsell.

Session prize went to Eddie Fann, Howard Frizelle and Caroline Harris. There was also a special prize to Chris and John Nadauld.

RIVERSIDE

WELL done to Trish Bell and Adriana Peens, and John Gibson and Stefan Helberg, the winners of the club’s nominated pairs.

Edna Beckett and Gordon Ogilvie won the Food Lover’s 2-4-2, followed by Chummy Smith and Norma Louw.

Sessions went to Dave Barber and Trish Bell, Dick Thompson and Sharon Smith.

SOUTHPORT

THE South Coast Herald 2-4-2 is to be played today (11th).

The ever-popular men’s trips, sponsored by Dr D’Arcy, is due to be contested on May 18.

THE BELL

NEXT sponsored competition will be the Fruit & Veg 2-4-2 on Tuesday, May 16.

May birthday tea is on May 17, convener is Lynne Bamber.

Congratulations to Daphne Sapford’s team on coming second in the Margate Week tournament.

Bowls times are now 1.15pm for 1.30pm for Wednesday and Saturday afternoon bowls and 8.45 am Sunday mornings.

TWENI

JAN Huygen and Dudley Isemonger won the recently played South Coast Herald men’s pairs from runners-up Keith Mills and Peter Anderson.

Luke Pohl and AN Other took the session prize.

Tony Johnson, Astrid Jackson and Derick Cilliers won the Schooners Restaurant mixed trips from runners-up Keith Mills, Tammy Gibbons and Daphne Hounsell.

Jane Massam, Rentie Stevens and Mike Findlay took the session prize.

The next event is the club committee meeting today (11th) at 2.30pm. Wimpy women’s pairs is on Thursday, May 18.

VILLAGE

A VERY big thank you to all those who helped on the greens and in the club with the bar, kitchen and ticket selling during last week’s Margate Week.

Next competition is Martin Electronics men’s 2-4-2 on May 18, followed by Hopden’s Kwikspar mixed 2-4-2 on May 23.

The in-house Food Lover’s Market drawn mixed trips was won by John Sutton, Ken Habben and Charlotte van Niekerk, followed by Brian Hughes, Aubrey Watson and Gill Davies.

There will be a bring and braai on Friday, May 19 and Dave’s Breakfast on Sunday, May 21.
