He gave chase.

Pursuing the vehicle along the R612 towards Park Rynie, the officer realised he needed to call for back-up when the driver of the Corolla turned off onto the N2 heading north towards Durban.

“The commander of the Umzinto K9 Unit, together with Warrant Officer Shannon Joothan and Sergeants Brandon Gates and Pagel Rajah responded,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

Having reached the N2 northbound off-ramp at Umkomaas in the nick of time, they spotted the Corolla, still travelling at high speed. With blue light flashing and sirens blaring, they gave chase.

The Corolla was successfully intercepted near the Magabeni off-ramp moments later.

Three women and a man – the driver – were arrested after goods found in their vehicle tied them to unsolved shoplifting cases in Umzinto.

Police now believe that, despite having only three registered cases of shoplifting for investigation, more cases will be registered as the suspected stolen property carried branding from several different stores.

It was also established that the 19-year-old driver  did not have a valid driver’s licence and was charged accordingly.

The suspects were taken to the Umzinto Police Station where they were charged and detained.

The vehicle has been impounded by police.
