RNM council approves R1-billion in new adjustment budget

JUST over R1-billion in the 2016/2017 adjustment budget was collectively approved by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council during a council meeting held at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre last week.

The Uvongo fishing pier is among the upgrades provided for in the adjustment budget, as are potholes and road infrastructure.

Mayor,  Cynthia Mqwebu, told councillors that the budget had been adjusted from R983,6-million due to decreased revenue, salary hikes and allowances.

The operating budget was adjusted from R837,2-million to R943,5-million while the capital budget was adjusted from R146,4-million to R153,3-million.

Cllr Mqwebu commended all councillors for working together despite political affiliations and urged them to keep working towards bettering their communities.

“This budget will go a long way towards fulfilling the vision of the Freedom Charter that South Africa belongs to all who live in it.”

Council also felt that this adjustment budget will also help address the challenges faced by communities.

The breakdown of the adjusted capital budget is as follows:

* Municipal Infrastructure Grant Funding – R60,1-million

* Housing grant – R13-million

* Provincial treasury technology hub – R37-million

* Department of Transport, intermodal facility – R9-million

* Other grants including EPWP, dermacation grant etc – R22,7-million

* Internal Funding – R11,6-million.
