SHOCKED to discover that his home had been burgled, a Richmond Road, Freeland Park resident possibly never even suspected that his own gardener would have made off with most of his goods.

Magma Security officials received information that the stolen property had been stored at a businessman’s property in the Umgababa area pending the return of the gardener, Robert Chambezi.

The KZN Provincial Task Team joined forces with Magma Officials and, after successfully tracing Mr Chambezi to an airport in Gauteng, arrested him on Wednesday, November 30.

“The suspect was handed over to the Scottburgh Cluster Detective Task Team members and further investigations led them, accompanied by members of the Umzinto K9 unit, to a residence in Preston Road, Park Rynie where Chambezi’s alleged accomplice, Patrick Simon, was arrested,” said Scottburgh SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

Both suspects led police to the property in Umgababa where some of the stolen property was recovered and subsequently returned to the rightful owner.

“It came to light that Patrick Simon was friends with the Umgababa businessman and hired his truck to transport the property from Freeland Park to Umgababa. The owner of the truck was led to believe that the property belonged to Chambezi who was relocating to Stanger and that the property was being stored temporarily until Chambezi returned from Gauteng and hired his truck again to take it to his new residence in Stanger,” said Captain Pandarum.

Both Mr Chambezi and Mr Simon – who were identified as foreign nationals – appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, December 1, facing charges of housebreaking and theft.

They were remanded back into police custody until their next appearance on December 20.

Anyone with information is advised to contact the investigator, Detective Warrant Officer Yugen Moodley of the Scottburgh SAPS Cluster Detective Task Team at 039-9781900.
