Potchefstroom couple robbed on beach

File photo.

A COUPLE  visiting the South Coast from Potchefstroom was robbed on the beach yesterday at around lunch time.

The man and his wife were walking along the railway line at Melville beach when they were approached by three men.

“One of the men produced a knife and held it to the man’s throat, demanding that the couple hand over their bag,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

They grabbed the bag containing house keys, a camera, remote and fishing gear before fleeing.

The couple was not injured.

Beachgoers are urged to avoid deserted and bushy places, and to frequent only demarcated beaches where there is plenty of activity.

They are also advised not to take expensive items and jewellery to the beach.
