20 bags of ‘bathtub speed’ seized in Leisure Bay

Arrested: Raymond van Goeverden will appear in court today (Thursday) on drug-related charges.

RAYMOND van Goeverden (45) of Leisure Bay appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court last week after he was bust with drugs with an estimated street value of R16 000.

Detective Sergeant Michelle van Niekerk, together with members from Crime Intelligence, Margate, were conducting an operation in Trafalgar when they stopped Van Goeverden’s vehicle after receiving information that he was selling dagga. Cocaine and one bag of dagga were found in the vehicle.

Police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka, said police then went to Van Goeverden’s  home in Sardine Drive, Leisure Bay, where they recovered 20 bags of ‘cat’ and more dagga. They also seized an undisclosed sum of cash.

Methcathinone is a white crystalline powder, commonly known as ‘cat’ and sometimes ‘bathtub speed’, which has gained a major foothold in South Africa as ‘poor man’s coke’.

Van Goeverden will appear in court again on Thursday (February 25) for bail application.
