The middle section of Suid-Natal Primary's school hall roof collapsed during the early hours of this morning.

THE roof of the school hall at Suid-Natal Primary came crashing down in the early hours of this morning.

Fortunately the hall was empty at that hour, but it is routinely used not only by school pupils, but also by a dance school, karate club and a church.

Jaya Pillay from the department of education’s physical resource planning unit and Sandi Meyiwa, control works inspector from the department of public works, together with an engineer visited the site earlier this morning.

They did a preliminary investigation, and public works is compiling a technical report which will be forwarded to the the department of education for consideration.

The reconstruction project will consist of two phases.

Phase one: Clearing of the site to enhance safety and security. This will take place as soon as possible.

Phase two: Cost estimates in terms of reconstruction and making good.

The initial investigation revealed that the roof collapsed due to structural failure – the roof trusses gave way. However, further investigations will have to take place to confirm this.

The area around the hall has been cordoned off, and Suid-Natal Primary’s principal has confirmed that no pupils or staff were injured.

Teaching continued as per usual.
