A FIRE broke out at Mkholombe informal settlement near Merlewood yesterday.

According to reports from  KZN Emergency Medical Services, paramedics and fire fighters from Hibiscus Coast Fire and Rescue responded to the blaze which had spread  to other shacks.

Some shacks were completely destroyed by the blaze, while several others were damaged. No injuries were reported.

According to Robert Mckenzie from KZN EMS, firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze. They also had to cool several large LP gas cylinders that were among the debris.

Hibiscus Cost Municipality spokesman Simon April s confirmed the incident.

“Our fire crew was alerted at around noon that informal dwellings were on fire at Mkholombe. However due to restricted access for fire engines, a number of hoses had to be run towards the fire.

“After the fire was extinguished, it was established that six dwellings had been completely gutted and five had been partially damaged by the blaze,” he said.

“At present it is suspected that the fire was caused by a faulty primus stove,” he added.

According to police spokesman Lt-Colonel Zandra Wiid no case has been opened and authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
